Elementary School - STAAR™
STAAR Tests for Elementary Students
What is different about STAAR at the Elementary School level?
For all subjects except grade 5 Science, the new assessments will test content students studied in that year, as opposed to testing content studied over multiple years. The new STAAR assessments are designed to be more difficult than TAKS. The difficulty level will be increased by including the following changes:
What score will be needed to pass STAAR?
School districts will not know what score will be considered Satisfactory Performance on the STAAR test in grades 3-8 until Fall 2012. The Texas Education Agency has identified three performance categories for the grade 3-8 STAAR tests:
Students testing during the Spring 2012 will not have performance results on the new STAAR test until after they start the next grade. Students will receive a report indicating their raw score at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
Are 5th grade students required to pass STAAR in order to be promoted to 6th grade?
No, students will not be held subject to Student Success Initiative (SSI) for the 2011-2012 school year because there will be no performance standards in place for grades 3-8. Therefore, there are no SSI requirements for the 2011-2012 school year. The SSI promotion requirement will return in the 2012-2013 school year and students in grades 5 and 8 will once again be required to pass STAAR before bing promoted to the next grade level.
