COPPERAS COVE – Trustees have approved the hiring of the next principal who will lead Cove’s youngest students.
Tuesday, during its regular monthly meeting, the Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Heather Peacock to Principal at Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy for the 2025-26 school year.
Peacock has been with the district since 2018, when she joined as a DoDEA II Grant Project Director. Since 2020, Peacock has worked as an assistant principal at Mae Stevens and for a year at Williams/Ledger Elementary.
Additionally, Peacock has experience as CCISD’s Elementary Summer School principal since 2022.
“Ms. Peacock has proven to be an invaluable team member and we are excited to see where our early education programs go under her leadership,” said Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins. “We are confident that the exceptional work at Mae Stevens will not just continue, but continue to improve how we work every day to establish a strong educational foundation for every student who walks through the campus’ doors.”
In addition to serving as assistant principal, Peacock has served as the campus’ instructional coach since 2023.
Peacock has experience as a teacher in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Copperas Cove. Prior to joining Copperas Cove ISD as an administrator, Peacock worked with the Military Child Education Coalition, collaborating with Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), CCISD and MCEC to ensure the needs of military-connected students and their families are met.
“I am honored to be selected to serve as principal of Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy, where I’ve spent the past four years supporting our mission of high achievement and continuous growth,” Peacock said. “I remain committed to fostering a reflective, supportive school culture, strengthening instructional practices rooted in the science of reading and continuing exponential social-emotional growth, as well as building strong partnerships with families to ensure every child is prepared to succeed in their future school endeavors. I am grateful to take on my dream job.”
Peacock holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and master’s degrees from Lamar and Southern New Hampshire Universities. She will assume her new position this summer, in preparation for the next school year.
Additionally, the board approved funding for Elementary/Secondary Enrichment toward the first goal in its recently-adopted Board of Trustees goals. That funding will establish a Director of Fine Arts, who will oversee all fine arts programs in the district, from enrichment opportunities at the elementary level to choir, band and more at the junior high and high school level.
Trustees also approved an out-of-state trip request for students who qualified for SkillsUSA national competition next month in Atlanta. Additionally, they approved listing a tax-delinquent property within the district for resale.
“Like all public school districts across Texas, we face significant financial challenges,” Hawkins said. “By taking this property and listing it for resale, our district and every other entity waiting on those tax dollars can get this property back on the tax roll and, in our instance, we can use those dollars to better serve our students and team members.”
Trustees also approved the purchase of Chromebook computers for student use next year, in an effort to improve technology infrastructure and the technology use experience for students and staff.
The CCISD Board of Trustees is next scheduled to hold its regular June workshop and meeting. Its workshop is scheduled for Noon on June 9th, with its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. on June 10th.
Agendas for each Board of Trustees meeting are posted outside the CCISD Service & Training Center on South Main Street 72 hours prior to each meeting. Once posted, they can be viewed on the School Board page of the district website.
