COPPERAS COVE – The top middle school assistant principal in Region 12 is in Copperas Cove ISD.
Former Copperas Cove Jr. High assistant principal Kelly Thompson has been named the top middle school assistant principal in Region 12 for the 2025-26 school year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
Thompson served in the assistant role at Cove Jr. High from January 2022 until she was promoted to principal at Martin Walker Elementary School in July.
“Being named TASSP Region 12 Assistant Principal of the Year is truly an honor,” Thompson said. “I love my job and the incredible school community I get to serve every day. This recognition comes from leading with heart to support our staff and students. They inspire me daily and remind me why this work matters.”
Thompson is the third assistant principal from CCISD to receive this honor and her award marks the second consecutive year it has lived in Cove schools. Marshall Chauvin received the award a year ago, before his promotion to principal at S.C. Lee Jr. High, and Julie Kearney won the award in the mid-2000’s while working in the district.
“Mrs. Thompson has come up through the ranks in our district and proven herself to be an outstanding educational leader,” said Dr. Brent Hawkins, Superintendent of Schools. “Her dedication to the students and staff, alike, help make the campuses she’s worked on successful and create a positive learning environment for each student. We are proud of her and she is beyond deserving of this award.”
Thompson has been with CCISD since 2012, starting as a substitute teacher and instructional aide. Prior to her move into administration, Thompson spent nine years as a teacher at Clements/Parsons Elementary School.
Thompson will be recognized by the TASSP throughout the 2025-26 school year, as well as at the organization’s annual summer workshop next year.
