COPPERAS COVE – A group of Cove archers are headed to compete for a state championship.
The Fairview/Jewell Elementary Bulldawg archery team has become the first full CCISD archery team to qualify for the National Archery in the Schools Program Texas State Championships.
“This team embodies everything it means to be a Bulldawg, and I could not be more proud of them,” said Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins. “Many of these students started with a new activity and, just a year later, are among the state’s best. I can’t wait to see them represent our district well and bring some hardware back to Bulldawg Nation.”
Nineteen students participate on the team will advance, after the team sent a pair to State last year. The Fairview/Jewell team is in its fourth year, all under coach Dr. Amanda Brown.
“I think that it is a very big accomplishment,” said Victoria Fajardo, a 5th-grade student and Team Captain. “It was our goal and we met that goal. I’m very proud of our team and our coach.”
While the team at Fairview/Jewell is in its fourth year, CCISD has been working to expand archery offerings for students at every elementary school in the district to provide more choices for students.
“I feel good that our team made it to State because, for most of us, it’s our first year,” said Macy Salter, a 5th-grade student who started with the team this year. “It feels good to know that we accomplished that goal and were able to make it.”
The NASP Texas State Championships are scheduled for March 20th-21st in San Antonio.
“While we work to ensure our academic programs remain the best in the area, we know it’s important that students be well-rounded,” Dr. Hawkins said. “These 19 students at Fairview/Jewell are proof that when parents make The Cove Choice, they’re making the choice for their student to see great success both in and out of the classroom.”
