COPPERAS COVE – A tradition of excellence continues both on the volleyball court, and in the classroom, in Copperas Cove.
Thursday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association named the Copperas Cove High School varsity Lady Dawg Volleyball team one of just over 1,400 high school or college teams across the United States to earn the AVCA’s 2026 Team Academic Award, which recognizes teams which maintain an year-long GPA of 3.30 or higher.
“This is one of our favorite awards to announce to our athletes,” said CCHS head volleyball coach Christy Thompson. “It demonstrates how smart and dedicated they truly are to bring their best and reach their maximum potential. For the majority of them that balance both school and volleyball, the academics is what will take them to the next level.”
This marks the seventh consecutive year the program has earned the prestigious award from the AVCA, with the varsity squad averaging a 3.80 yearlong GPA on a 4.0 scale.
“Our volleyball athletes embody everything it means to be a student-athlete in Copperas Cove,” said Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins. “These young ladies are achieving incredible things in their high school careers, whether that’s winning on the court, finishing an associate degree or industry certification, or working toward a place in the Top 10% in their class. I could not be more proud of them for the work they’ve put into their craft, and I look forward to continued success in the years to come.”
The Lady Dawgs have earned playoff berths for 20 consecutive seasons. The journey toward a 21st-straight trip to the postseason begins with practice opening Aug. 3rd and their first regular-season match on Aug. 11th in Thorndale.
